Pitch A Tent! May 23, 2011

Filed under: Details,Uncategorized,Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 11:03 am

There is nothing I love more than a perfectly adorned tent at a Spring and Summer Wedding. I love pristine white tents adorned with paper lanterns and lights. I love tents drapped in exotic fabrics and dripping in crystals. I love tents with side walls of faux windows, lined with flowers or decorated with custom drapes.  I love tents of any size, any shape, any color.  I just love tents!

Loving tents can get you in a lot of trouble. Tents may not be as economical as renting an indoor facility, especially when you consider that the tent is just the ceiling. You have to fill all the space underneath the tent with tables, chairs, a dance floor, silverware, glasses and every other minor detail that would be readily available to you in an indoor facility.

For those brides-to-be whose wedding visions include a tent, here are some important points for you to consider:

Selecting a tent size: You need to determine the number of people you expect to attend your wedding. That will help you decide how large a structure you will need. Accurately sizing your tent is very important since the size will need to accommodate tables, chairs, guests and vendors comfortably, with room to walk around, mingle and dance.

Location of the tent: The tent site should be a completely flat surface, away from any standing water or areas where rainwater typically accumulates. This is key in case you will want to install a dance floor. As a safety precaution you’ll want your tent rental company to conduct a site inspection to survey the area.

Styles of tents: Push-pole Tents are the most popular type of tents for outdoor weddings. These structures are kept in place with center poles and are staked into the ground. Push-pole tents are typically the least expensive tent and work best on grass or other pliable surfaces. Sizes range anywhere between from 10 x 10 feet and up and can be covered with fabric or PVC roofs or toppers.

Frame Tents are best for tight spaces. These structures cost more than the push-pole version, because they don’t use poles to support the structure, but a frame. As a result, they can be positioned on any type of surface. Accommodating all of your wedding decorating needs.

Additional considerations: Sidewalls are a practical tent “accessory” Sidewalls are used to create ventilation or protect guests from rain or wind. Before signing a contract with a company, be sure to specify where and when the tent will need to be erected and dismantled. Typically, most companies will set up a couple of days before the event and removal is the next day (this time frame may vary due to holiday or weekend schedules).

The most important consideration of all is the weather.  Tents do not work if rain is in the forecast.  If  a tent is part of your dream wedding, then be sure to check the Farmer’s Almanac for past weather patterns.  You wouldn’t want your dream wedding to be rained out!

Hope these quick tops help all the New Indian Brides who are pitching a tent for their wedding festivities this spring and summer. Best of luck!

Introducing TNIB Featured Cake Artist – Natasha Amiri! April 21, 2011

Filed under: Vendors,Wedding Cake — The New Indian Wife @ 7:08 am

For those of you who regularly read The New Indian Bride, you know how much I LOVE introducing my readers to up-and-coming wedding industry professionals.  Well today is no exception!  Allow me to introduce dazzling cake artist Natasha Amiri.  Natasha and I work together and were surprise to recently discover that we both serve weddings in our own way – me through blogging wedding inspirations and realities and Natasha through baking and designing beautiful wedding cakes!  It was a match made in heaven and we have been chatting about weddings ever since!  Now it is your turn to get to know this San Francisco based cake artist.

TNIB: How did you start baking cakes?

Natasha: My co-worker had gotten engaged, so I decided to surprise her with a cake. I went to Michaels (craft store) to shop for some cake pans and ended up staying for 2 hours, hypnotically entranced by all the cake possibilities showcased in front of me. After coming to my senses I came out of Michaels with 3 cake pans, a box of fondant and 3 shades of purple food coloring. I went to Safeway and bought 4 boxes of cake mix and began the process.   Eight hours later I had a 3 tiered cake that actually didn’t look to bad. My parents woke up and were thoroughly shocked when opening the fridge, and the same went for the my friends at work.  Everyone suggested I try making another to see what else I was capable of, and well, here I am today!

TNIB: How long do wedding cakes take to make?

Natasha: Now that I don’t make my cakes from a box anymore, and I have become a perfectionist, a cake can take anywhere from 5 -9 hours.

TNIB: Do you enjoy collaborating with Brides and Grooms to create the cake design?

Natasha: I absolutely love the collaboration! It’s so funny that my current consultations with the wedding couples have entailed the groom having more of a say then the bride! But yes, this is one of biggest days of their lives so it’s completely invigorating to hear their family and relationship history to help them create a beautiful masterpiece which reflects all of that joy. The only hard part I would say is having the bride and groom agree! What makes it easy is knowing that your making their wish come true, and even finding a way to make their wedding cake more extravagant than they even ever imagined for their particular budget.

TNIB: What trends are you seeing in wedding cakes or what trends do you want to see more of?

Natasha: I see more and more couples veer away from the classic white; a trend that I hope continues.  It never made much sense to me to have such a plain wedding cake. Honestly, when I see those, I just feel as though it’s a blank canvas waiting for me to put my touch to it. Although I DO, and will gladly make whatever , I prefer more artistic expression. It is YOUR wedding, so why not express who you are in your cake as well? In terms of trends, I see a lot of younger couples wanting cupcakes, and of course for summer weddings I have a lot of requests for fresh orchids. You can never go wrong with fresh colorful flowers!

TNIB: Now tell us, what’s your favorite cake to eat?

Natasha: Two Words: Red Velvet!

Doesn’t that peacock extravaganza knock your socks off! Wowza is all I can say!  Thank you Natasha for gracing The New Indian Bride with your beautiful cakes.  To learn more about Natasha visit www.cakesbyshabnam.com or email her directly at  cakesbyshabnam@gmail.com.

A Perfect Touch – Card Boxes! September 20, 2010

Filed under: Details,Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 11:18 am

The New Indian Bride is excited to introduce something that is bound to be a fabulous and eye-catching addition to your wedding, specifically your wedding gift table!  Since so many Indian families tend to give the gift of cold hard cash why not include a beautiful, custom decorated card box to capture these wonderful gifts.  Marni Gold is Lead Designer and founder of Creative Custom Card Boxes.  She recently launched a line of card boxes specifically for Indian weddings and TNIB is thrilled to feature her today!

TNIB: How did you start creating wedding card boxes?

Marni: I started this business because for my own wedding I just could not find anything I liked! I did not want to burden any family member’s with having to mind the cards and gifts we received and anything I saw in the stores was tacky and didn’t blend well with my chic and fun wedding theme. I decided to make a card box for my wedding and after seeing the pictures, my bride-to-be friends of mine wanted one! My wedding planner also encouraged me to start selling them and so I did!

TNIB: Why are these perfect for Indian weddings?

Marni: The reason we wanted to create our Indian Wedding Card Boxes line in addition to the card boxes we currently make is that Indian and South Asian weddings usually have large turnout and predominately cash/monetary gifts.  The lavish designs and colors of Indian weddings, both modern and traditional do not call for a flimsy white card box from the craft store.  Our card boxes are perfect because they can be customized to the size of the event, the colors and the design!

TNIB: How much input can a bride have in the creation of her card box?
Marni: Creative Custom Card Boxes are made/based on what a bride/couple want. We want to make sure the card box meets and exceeds the expectations of our client.  We work with the client every step of the way and have been praised for our customer service.

TNIB: What unique or special touches have you incorporated into recent card boxes?

Marni: Oh there are so many!  One recent card box we designed to echo the pearl design on the bride’s wedding dress. Another sweet 16 card box was created to perfectly match aspects of the cake. Yet another card box we did has hand painted peacock feathers as well as real peacock feathers embellishing the box!

TNIB: What is the price range for your card boxes?
Marni: Creative Custom Card Boxes start at $60 for a 1 tier and go up based on design, embellishments, amount of tiers, etc.  Our Indian Wedding Card Boxes line will have a similar price structure but will include many more options including multiple colors of swarovski crystals, sumptuous fabrics, mehndi designs and more!

TNIB: I want one! How do I get started?
Marni: Brides can reach us easily at http://www.creativecustomcardboxes.com and place an order on our order page.  If they need help with the order process we are always available via email at info@creativecustomcardboxes.com
You can also see a peek of what we’re working at building towards the launch of our Indian Wedding Card Boxes line at http://www.indianweddingcardboxes.com

TNIB: anything else brides should know about card boxes?

Marni: Card boxes need not be plain white and boring.  Bring in some color and let us help you coordinate your card box with your wedding design!  Most importantly, a closed card box like ours is a safe and SECURE way to store your cards and monetary gifts from your wedding.  The card box then becomes a beautiful place to store lovely mementos after the wedding.

About Marni: Creative Custom Card Boxes began when Marni was planning her own wedding in 2008.  Frustrated with the gaudy, tacky or just plain expensive options she came across, she along with her mom Linda Protovin, with years of decor and entertaining experience, finally created an eco- friendly custom card box that was simple, elegant, and understated while still corresponding with the wedding colors and theme. Marni came to the wedding and party business in a slightly different way than many. Marni is a trained singer and experienced voice teacher who studied opera and musical theater in college and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Central Florida. Marni’s performance career took her to Germany, England and Italy, where she was inspired to share her passion for music through teaching.

Photography Week at TNIB! September 14, 2010

Filed under: Photography Week,Uncategorized,Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 11:30 am

When the ladoos are all gone, the bridal lengha is packed away and the mehndi has faded all that will be left are the fabulous memories of your wedding day.  Hiring a photographer that meets your aesthetic is the easy part.  The harder part is ensuring the photographer you selected is able to capture all the special moments of your big day.  Which is why I couldn’t be more excited to have San Francisco Bay Area wedding photographer Jigar Champaneria of Samay Studio Photography offer his expert insight!  Brides – you are going to love Jigar’s fabulous tips!

TNIB: As a photographer, what should the Bride and Groom share that helps you photograph a wedding?

Jigar: Besides the events of the day, talk to your photographer about what is important or what you are worried about.  If there are two traditions (i.e. Gujarati and Tamil) in the wedding how are you blending the two? Was there any tension in combing events? Let your photographer know about this since it can help to focus on certain aspects of the wedding or conversely, stay away from photographing other aspects.

Do you have any surprises planned for the day? Many couples like to surprise guests with a choreographed dance.  If this is something you have planned make sure your photographer knows about it so they can be ready to capture the surprised looks on your guests’ faces.

TNIB: Should you communicate details you would like captured?

Jigar: Yes, let your photographer know about specific things you want extra attention paid to.  Are you totally into your shoes? Let your photographer know about how cool your shoes are so they know it’s something they should spend extra time on.

TNIB: Should the couple creat a short list of the specific photos they want?

Jigar: Many photographers say they hate it when their clients give them a “shot list” where the bride is demanding a certain set of photos from throughout the day. But I think it helps to spend time going over some of the most important moments for you and even some examples of photos you have loved from other weddings. This isn’t a formal shot list, but it helps to ensure that you and your photographer are on the same page.

TNIB: Is it important to select a style of photography for the wedding day?

Jigar: No matter how much you might want candid, photojournalistic style photos, you are going to want some wonderful portraits. These portraits are typically what you and your parents will have enlarged.  So set aside time for a private portrait session in your wedding and reception attire. For wedding portraits, don’t just plan for post-ceremony photos at the mandap – try to take some wedding portraits before the ceremony so you look fresh.

TNIB: Any final thoughts?

Jigar: Try to add fun and special moments to your day that can lead to special photographs. How about a “First Look” before your wedding portraits? It really is a special moment when you see your fiance for the first time all decked out in their wedding attire. Why not capture that first glimpse of each other during a private moment rather than as the wedding ceremony starts?

Also, in addition to your wedding coordinator, your photographer is the key person to help keep your schedule on track. Make sure you let your photographer know about your detailed agenda. A great photographer will politely help you to stay on time.

About Jigar: Jigar has been a lifelong, mostly self-taught photographer. Based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Jigar has been a professional wedding photographer for six years. In addition to weddings and family portrait photography, he has a passion for helping others to improve their photography so he leads informal workshops focusing on different aspects of the craft.  See more of Jigar’s work at www.SamayStudio.com, www.facebook.com/samaystudio and follow him on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jigarchamp.

Sweet Week!!! August 30, 2010

Filed under: Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 11:54 am

This week is going to be sweet because we are featuring all the delicious, tantalizing, sweet treats that appear at weddings!  This week TNIB is all about cupcakes, cakes and mittai! Is your mouth-watering?  Mine sure is!

Let’s get started with my favorite little indulgence - the cupcake!  Who doesn’t love this perfectly sized, moist, flavor filled, sweet treat?  I know I do! I also know there is no one better to share the secrets of wedding cupcakes than up and coming cupcake artist Radha Champaneria of Radha’s cupcakes. I am thrilled to feature Radha on TNIB today!

TNIB: Why are cupcakes great for weddings?

Radha: Cupcakes are great for wedding since they are small and the bride and groom can actually pick a ton of flavors. With a wedding cake, it’s just one flavor and it needs to be cut up and served. With cupcakes, you can have a variety and place it on a desert bar with other assortments. I have even had someone ask me if it would be possible to do cupcake towers as a centerpiece, which I think is a great way to give your guests their sweets!

TNIB: What do most couples ask for in their wedding cupcakes? A particular style? Flavors? Colors to match their wedding colors, etc?

Radha: Red Velvet is by far the most popular flavor. Next would be chocolate. In the end, I think it all comes down to how outgoing and adventurous the couple is with flavors. As a baker, when I do tastings, I not only make flavors the bride and groom request but also try to encourage them to try other flavors they would not have considered. Some people love to have cupcakes match their color theme and when that is the case there are so many options such as using colored liners for the cupcakes, or stands, linens and flowers to add a great look to match.

TNIB: Are there any trends in cupcakes right now? Are they trendier than before with the newish chains like Sprinkles and Karas?

Radha: I have to say yes, cupcakes are more trendier now since people pretty much do what you could do on a cake on a cupcake instead. But at the end of the day, I personally feel that the simpler the cupcake the more elegant and appealing it looks.

TNIB: Any tips for making a Radha quality cupcake at home?

Radha: The cupcakes I make are not recipes I have created myself. But even to follow a recipe and get it perfect can be hard. It’s all about consistency, measurements and lots of patience. Baking is not something where you can rush and cut things out. I like to put my own little twist on each recipe and do something a little different but that’s only possible when you keep trying until you perfect it.

TNIB: How did you get into cupcakes?

Radha: I have always enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining. I always wanted to learn how to decorate cakes so I took up some basic classes. Actually, I ended up taking four types of cake decorating classes. As beautiful as cakes are, I feel cupcakes are just more fun and you can do so much with them. Getting into cupcakes had a lot to do with my friends and family, who of course get to enjoy my baked goods and simply enjoy them. Most of my orders are for birthday, baby shower’s, bridal showers and I am just starting to do weddings. Of course some people order them just so that they can have them!

If you are a bride to be in the SF Bay Area and if cupcakes are part of your celebration then Radha is the cupcake artist for you!  Become her fan on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/radhascupcakes?ref=ts or contact her via email at radhachamp@yahoo.com.

Lemon Inspiration July 28, 2010

Filed under: Details,Uncategorized,Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 10:54 am

If you watch TLC, Bravo and the Style Channel you will quickly come to believe that wedding planning requires not only elaborate inspiration boards but also creatively worded themes like Moroccan Bliss or Tuscan Love.

For me, inspiration came not from cutting out pages of magazines or watching TV shows but rather from a simple feeling I wanted to capture.  It is that feeling of a lazy Sunday afternoon where one sits outside in the sunshine and enjoys a mimosa (or another drink of choice) with the one they love.  If those wedding shows were to give it a name it would be something like Chic, Casual Summertime Love.

Nothing captured this feeling more than this image from Style Me Pretty.

I love the simplicity of the lemons in the vases and the sprig like flower that fluttered from the top.  And what could feel more summertime than a wooden sign for lemonade?

My very talented florist from Cupid’s Arrow took this image and created a version that was perfect for our daytime affair.  Here is what it looked like at our wedding:

While I was inspired by a mood, the image from one of my favorite wedding websites helped us create a centerpiece that embodied that mood and fit our daytime affair perfectly.

What inspires you?  Is it books, movies, pictures, fabrics, candles, a poem or another event you attended.  Tell us what you are using as your wedding planning inspiration!

DJ Play My Tune! July 16, 2010

Filed under: Helpers,Uncategorized,Vendors — The New Indian Wife @ 3:03 pm

TNIB is all for taking help from friends (as discussed in the previous post), friends of friends and even friends of your little brother.

Meet Manu.  The cutest dhol player and DJ a wedding could ever ask for!  Manu and my brother have been best friends since college and we were delighted that Manu was willing and able to DJ our sangeet and wedding.  Manu is a doctor doing his residency at Stanford who just happens to DJ for fun.  After getting off a 36 hour shift, Manu drove his equipment from San Francisco to LA for our festivities.  He arrived a few hours before the sangeet, took a power nap, put on his very GQ pink outfit and rocked the night away at our Pretty in Pink Sangeet.  The next day he was ready bright and early to play the dhol as the baraat arrived and DJ our afternoon reception.   He played everything from Hindi love songs to Bhangra to New Kids on the Block (as an ode to my teenage days!) He knew how to keep the party moving, keep the guests dancing and the smiles beaming.

Manu helped create a beautiful memory of our wedding day and that is truly the very best gift I could every receive. Thank you Manu for being a perfect addition to our wedding!  We are so very grateful for wonderful friends like you.

Manu is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Check out his website www.klasikhz.com and for DJ requests email him directly at manu.uberoi@gmail.com.
